The poet is Gerald Manley Hopkins: a brilliant Oxford scholar who became a Jesuit priest. His poetry was little known when he died of typhoid in 1889. After the publication of a collection in 1918, he became recognised as a major poet. Hopkins is noted for his invention (or discovery) of ‘sprung rhythm’: an abrupt form of poetic metre in contrast to the ‘running rhythm’ (stressed and unstressed syllables) of traditional metre. The ‘Wreck of the Deutschland’ and ‘Pied Beauty’ are well known thanks to their appearances in numerous anthologies.
